Candles are not just decorative elements, they create a cozy atmosphere, bring relaxation, and fill any moment with pleasant aromas. Whether it's for a romantic evening or a time of peace and well-being, candles are an integral part of our daily lives. If you've purchased a candle with a wooden wick, you've made a unique choice.
Wooden wicks add a gentle crackling sound, reminiscent of a small fireplace, while their horizontal burn creates a warm ambiance. However, you may have noticed that they burn differently compared to traditional cotton wicks, and you may have found it challenging to keep the wooden wick lit.
There is a specific preparation process for wooden wicks that ensures optimal burning and maximum performance of your candle. Let’s explore some useful tips to help you enjoy your candle to the fullest.
The Right Way to Burn a Wooden Wick Candle
t’s important to trim your wooden wick before each burn. When there is too much wick material between the flame and the wax, the candle may not ignite properly. If this happens, the candle will extinguish shortly after being lit. Additionally, after each burn, you will notice a small amount of extra wick left on the surface. Once the candle has completely cooled, remove this excess to ensure a clean and steady burn during the next use, otherwise, the flame will be small.
You don't need specialized tools to trim the wick. A good pair of scissors or nail clippers will do the job effectively. Personally, I often don’t use any tools at all—just my fingers, being careful not to remove too much wick, as this could result in a smaller flame.
Here are some helpful tips for preparing your wick for a long-lasting burn:
- Make sure your wick is trimmed to a length of 3.2mm – 4.8mm before lighting it.
- Wooden wicks have a larger surface area compared to cotton wicks. We recommend lighting the wick along the length of the candle, not just at one end.
- Avoid burning candles for more than 4 hours at a time.
- Keep trimming your wick between burns and remove any burnt pieces of wood from the top of your wick. You can easily remove these with your fingers.
- For safety reasons, only handle the candle when it has completely cooled down.
- Be mindful not to let any soot from the wick fall into the candle.
Additional Tips and Safety Measures
- Την πρώτη φορά που θα κάψετε το κερί σας, είναι σημαντικό να βεβαιωθείτε ότι όλη η επιφάνεια έχει λιώσει πριν το σβήσετε.
- The first time you burn your candle, it's important to ensure that the entire surface has melted before extinguishing it. Make sure the candle is placed in an area away from drafts, ceiling fans, or other air currents—this will protect the flame from touching the sides of the container. A good practice is to always place the candle on a heat-resistant surface and in a spot where you can keep an eye on it.
- Don’t touch or move the candle when it’s hot. Allow the candle and the wick to cool completely before deciding to move or trim the wick.
- Extinguish the candle when about 12.7mm of wax remains.
